Perry investigates themes of power and agency, especially as they are determined by race and gender identities. Embracing and integrating new digital platforms for installation and context-based artworks, the artist puts these questions of identity in conversation with contemporary articulations and embodiments of desire, materiality, labor, and history. Perry's works are both highly political and acutely familiar with colloquial experiences of digital interfaces. \r\n\r\nAs Perry states, \\"Using materials and preexisting media in the vehicles of performance and video production creates a space for the uncanny nature of the thing or object...The ability to strip, expand, or abstract content of its form\/identity, material, geological, digital, cultural, and physical is powerful and has the ability to be a radical act.\\"\r\n\r\nPlaying with the radical potential of familiarity, Perry undermines the illusionistic transparency of popular media to expose the fissures in its meaning and politicize its ubiquitous voice. Perry has defined the Internet as an \\"undefined space,\\" and stated of web-based projects: \\"These are spaces where there is autonomy or, if it's not autonomy, then the illusion of the autonomy that can be helpful to creating the self. I'm thinking in a capitalist, individualistic way, but on the Internet you can also use self-creation as a tool for political action and personal freedom.\\" \r\n\r\nPerry's web-based video project <em>imakelandartnow<\/em> effects a humorous critique of the contemporary art world by putting the ideologies of the white male-dominated land art movement in tension with the accessibility and technological plasticity of the Internet. In this project, Perry addresses the way that black women artists have been excluded from codified discourses and canons of art via the fusion of video and the Internet as \\"new media\\" platform.\r\n\r\nIn <em>Lineage for a Mutiple-Monitor Workstation: Number One<\/em>, another piece that uses computer aesthetics to investigate marginalization, Perry puts personal mythology in conversation with socially and culturally constructed identity. Here, Perry captures a loosely structured family ritual, directed by the artist and enacted by relatives. They appear wearing neon green masks, whose synthetic hue expresses the mutability of identity in the digital age, as well as the limitations imposed by certain cultural tropes. \r\n\r\nPerry also explores the production and expression of identity through technology, and how that identity has been historically informed by popular media and culture. <em>Young Women Sitting and Standing and Talking and Stuff (No, No, No)<\/em>, a two-hour durational performance, presents three women with miniature screens, which depict bored-looking eyes, attached to their faces. The three-channel video installation <em>Counter<\/em> is a sharply critical examination of racial and gender representation in and by popular news sources and talk shows. Three screens show disembodied mouths that move in sync with audio clips ranging from potentially benign inquiries to racist slurs and sexist diatribes. The piece foregrounds the judgments made and perpetuated by the media, and highlights the marginalization that has become at once ubiquitous and disembodied by technologies of dissemination.\r\n\r\nThe concern with the status of the black body in a not-so-post-racial society, along with its power and representation, is echoed in two of Perry's single-channel video works: <em>Black\/Cloud<\/em> and <em>Black Girl as a Landscape<\/em>. Both pieces are aesthetically hypnotizing depictions of actors whose movements are at once abstract and representational. The two videos are rife with references to artists that have influenced Perry's work, as well as to works of art and cinema that explore, or objectify, historically oppressed bodies. In <em>Black\/Cloud<\/em>, an actor sits center frame, covered in light-colored powder, alternately tossing it off of his body in a slow-motion explosion of light and texture, and then letting it fall back onto him. <em>Black Girl as a Landscape<\/em> is a slow pan across the silhouetted body of a horizontally framed figure, in which every detail of her movement becomes a momentous event, yet her identity remains perpetually obscured.\r\n\r\nAlso addressing the issue of historically erased bodies, Perry's <em>Double Quadruple Etcetera Etcetera I & II<\/em> shows two performers (Danny Giles and Joiri Minaya) pulse through a chaotic dance, only to be outdone by the frenetic attempts of a content-aware computer function to fill their bodies with the white walls behind them. Their hair —a historically politicized marker of racial identity—is left unaffected by the software, leaving a black swirl of movement to defy the system's insistence on invisibility.\r\n\r\nSondra Perry was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, in 1986. In <em>Lineage for a Multiple-Monitor Workstation: Number One <\/em>(2015), Perry references film and television production, intertwining the syntax of mass media and commercial technology with the artist's own personal and familial symbolism, resulting in a charged hybrid that both questions and celebrates the power of heritage and tradition.<br \/> <br \/> <em>My Twilight Zone Thing<\/em> re-stages the Rod Serling-narrated introductions to the popular 1960s-era sci-fi TV series, casting only participants of color in what was a predominantly white male narrative—albeit one that sought to unsettle the conservative homogeneity of mid-century America with tales of UFOs and other dimensions. Perrys work has been screened at venues such as Les Voutes, \r\nParis, France; Light Industry, New York; Video Art and Experimental Film Festival, Tribeca Cinemas, New York; Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts Museum, Shenyang China; and LOOP Barcelona Media Arts Festival. Perry was a panelist at Black Artists on Social Media at the Brooklyn Museum, NY. In 2014 Perry was Guest Lecturer at the School of Visual Arts, New York, for the course History, Theory, and Practice of the Image, and has participated in residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Vermont Studio Center, Ox-bow, and the Experimental Television Center.
